Madeline

Athens, GA native Madeline Adams has been writing and performing her own songs since the age of 15, self-releasing her first album, "Kissing & Dancing," in 2002 -- just two years into her career. A few short months later, the LP was picked up by punk label Plan-It-X Records. "Kissing & Dancing" is now in its fifth pressing, and has earned her national recognition and a solid fan base. Madeline recorded one more album for the label, before moving on to Athens label Orange Twin, who have released works most notably by Sibylle Baier, Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel and Vic Chesnutt. Her 2006 Orange Twin release, "The Slow Bang," was produced by Matthew Houck (Phosphorescent), and recorded at his house in Athens. Though described in the past as a cross between The Softies, Kimya Dawson, and The Carter Family, Madeline now shares more in common with '70's superstars Joni Mitchell and Karen Carpenter. On her third full-length album, "White Flag," Madeline securely sets herself apart from her peers through her intelligent, emotional lyrics, her clear, haunting voice, and her unique song writing.

The Good Doctor

The Good Doctor is a fresh musical outfit based out of Auburn, Alabama. They have taken the Auburn college scene by storm and have begun to spread the medicine throughout the southeast. Forming in early 2009, The Good Doctor began as a trio of Berklee College of Music graduates Austin Solomon on bass, Russel Garner on drums and Jonas Schultz on saxophone and keyboards. They expanded the lineup with vocalist and guitarist, and former Berklee schoolmate Austin Gray in May '09 and rounded out the group in August with Alabama native Chris Deason on trumpet and backing vocals. Since then, they've recorded a yet unreleased 6 song EP with producer/engineer Steve Meadows from The Loft in Columbus, GA and have been wowing audiences several times a week, honing their collective sound as The Good Doctor.

Flight Risk

Drummer Matthew Woolley says the music of FLT RSK (pronounced "Flight Risk") sounds like "a movie soundtrack," but it's hard to imagine what sort of futuristic action scene these washes of electronica might accompany. Maybe a video game soundtrack would be more fitting—with the driving percussion propelling the hero into an epic space battle as pulsating synth underscores the firing of beams from his laser gun. The more ethereal moments could even serve as a fitting welcome into some warped underwater world. FLT RSK's instrumental jams have an enveloping quality about them, and when the band performs live the audience seems mesmerized by the rhythms—swaying, rocking and bobbing in electronic bliss. And while admittedly this hypnotic trance may be enhanced by, let's say, herbal supplements, I think the smooth interweaving of Lawrence's keys and programming with Mansfield's woozy guitar effects and Woolley's popping percussion and samples is enough to bend your mind on its own. FLT RSK will release its self-titled debut EP in January of 2011. The disc will include guest vocals by Lera Lynn and Shelley Olin who also occasionally join the band live. --flagpole.com
